A sassy, sister cabaret!

Femmes by the Thames – Virgo night

‘One of the key aspects often used to describe Virgo characteristics is independence’

A very special edition of Femmes by the Thames featuring a full-length music set from Rosie Wilby with a full live band for the first time in over a decade. Performing on her birthday, she will be joined on the bill by a couple of her favourite comedians Sara Pascoe (as seen on TV in Free Agents, The Thick Of It and more) and Grainne Maguire (‘has a big future’ Time Out) and FBTT favourite, the character act Sadie Goldberg

Although now best known as a comedian, Rosie started out as a singer songwriter fronting her own band, performing at Glastonbury Festival and Ronnie Scott’s, supporting Bob Geldof and Jamie Cullum and releasing an album ‘Precious Hours’.

She recently dusted off her guitar and started practising up the old songs for inclusion in a new Edinburgh show Rosie’s Pop Diary. Then a chance encounter with former drummer Lisa Gordon who she had not seen for 13 years, coupled with a message from former bass player Dave Weightman to say that he was back from several years living and performing in Japan, seemed to suggest a band reunion was on the cards – with the line up completed by fellow South Londoner Paul Eldridge on keyboards.

Here’s what some critics had to say about ‘Precious Hours’…

"Her voice is glorious"
Betty Clarke, The Guardian

“She combines the power of PJ Harvey with the vulnerable sensitivity of Beth Orton and Tracey Thorn"
John Coleman, Whats On In London

"Creamy vocals and dreamy melodies. She's going to win a lot of hearts"
Evening Standard

"Rosie Wilby treats her guitar as an extension of herself in a manner that puts the likes of Sheryl Crow to shame...Her voice is glorious, ranging from the trembly heights of Kate Bush to a wistful, candyfloss lightness, warm and welcoming."
Betty Clarke, The Guardian

"London-based singer-songwriter Rosie Wilby's debut album majors in dreamy, largely acoustic pop, that bustles with well-arranged harmonies and soothing melodies. The wistful lyrical matter hinges on themes of love and loss, but the overall sound is pleasingly summery, and perked up by rich instrumentation throughout"
Tim Perry, The Independent

“yet another example of musical genius minus a recording deal"
TNT magazine

“She's the kind of singer songwriter that should be loved by urban cowgirls and cowboys under the bright lights of big cities everywhere. The sweet songstress enchanted the room with her honey-toned torch songs about lovers who don't love you back. Her 'Precious Hours' record is a songbook that, once open, is not easily forgotten”
Unpeeled, April 2004.

"Rosie Wilby has been compared to the likes of Patsy Cline. Her music manages to sound simultaneously contemporary and traditional - with emotional, personal songs frequently based on London themes"
Evening Standard - Dec 2002

"Wilby and her band are the stuff of dreams - strong, incisive lyrics; clean, pure vocals; delicious harmonies and acoustic guitar playing of the very best kind......Especially recommended for those who like Rickie Lee Jones, Roseanne Cash and Lucinda Williams. 'Tis truly manna from the heavens"
Sharon Lenehan, Barfly (Cairns, Australia)

All hosted by Fringe Report 2010 award winner Rosie Wilby.
