Another brilliant night at The RVT
When you’ve played countless gigs with three other bands who are shit and whose crowds all leave when they’ve finished, last night’s show at The RVT was a breath of fresh air.
Thanks to everyone who came and made noise, to everyone who stuck around for our show and showed their appreciation in the red bucket. But mostly thanks to the RVT for putting on a night that had so much variety and talent.
The day didn’t start well. I got a new keyboard stand left at the deliveries office, so I ran there for some exercise with just enough money to get the DLR back. Only they’d put the fares up. So I had to walk all the way back, sweaty, with this under my arm.
After soundcheck we had a couple of pints and meat-in-bread at a pub on Albert Embankment. There, a Brasilian man was playing acoustic guitar. It started really well, but didn’t continue really well. Low points were variations on More Than Words and a version of Hotel California where he just repeated the same verse over and over (the one with 1969 in it).
If we’d have left earlier, we’d have caught more of Hilda Eusébio. Annoyed that we didn’t, as we walked in to see her in a policewoman outfit and girdle throwing Hitler salutes behind mirror aviators. She was brilliant and intense but the way she threw the serious themes of her routine into relief at the end (which involved James’ Laid, a pink tutu, a ridiculous hat and hugging) showed a real sense of balance.
Pretty much everyone who came to see her stayed on for the next show - Mister Meredith’s Dragged, Kicked and Screaming. It somehow managed to mix themes of sex, violence and sexual violence with Noel Coward-style piano songs. Also he fell in love and did bumsex with Jesus. Highlight though was when his co-performer David Somerset Barnes sat on the corner of the stage with an acoustic guitar, dressed in a scout’s outfit and sang Glory Box. It sounds absurd, but it was haunting and beautiful. Even with a broken string. A rare talent that voice.
Meanwhile Amber and I were getting ready upstairs above the pub. Amber’s rider was waiting for her on the stairs.
This was attached to the bannisters leading to the top floor. Only at the RVT.
And in our dressing rooms, Amber found placards for a campaign she can really put her heart and soul into.
We were worried there might be some kind of exodus before we went on. But nearly everyone who’d stayed for the first two shows also stayed for ours. Full credit to the DJ for cranking up the music and getting everyone in the mood for it.
So by the time we went on, The RVT was really busy. The sound in there was huge. The bass shook the monitors on stage and we got so much back from the crowd. Spontaneous clapping, cheering all the way through the songs. I got such a sweat on my sunglasses wouldn’t stay up. We loved every minute of it.
So thanks again to The RVT. For putting us on first of all. But mainly for putting together a really well-balanced and diverse bill. And for an atmosphere that encouraged people to stay and (generously) support each other’s artistic efforts. It’s a very special place.
In non-Heads.Hearts related news, our sound guy and basically-third-bandmember Sean’s putting together a covers band for a friend’s 30th. Amber and I are both in it. Far as we’re concerned, this band is going to be called one thing, and one thing only…
